BB4- Safi Salamey

Hitler
Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr.

Summary

In my opinion, Hitler showed perseverance in a bad way, it was more like blind ambition than perseverance. But after everything Hitler was able to accomplish a lot for himself. Hitler tried to eliminate all the Jews because he thought they were the reason for his country's loss, and he almost succeeded in doing so. He overcame many obstacles, his dad died when he was young, then his mom followed. This put him in severe depression. He got bad grades in school and got abused by his parents, teachers, and schoolmates. This put more pressure on him. He sought happiness in painting. But despite traveling to numerous countries to pursue his dream of being an artist, he was still rejected by every art school he tried to join. Soon he was broke, he had no way of ever becoming a painter since he was rejected by everyone everywhere. He also was very bad in school so he wouldn’t be able to find a good job. He had no choice but to join the army. It was said that he fought well for his country. He was blinded by a bomb, but his eyes healed after a while. After his injury was taken care of, he immediately returned to the army. He enjoyed being a soldier, but problems had him out of the army. Germany, the country which he fought for, had lost the war. He blamed the Jewish. Hitler became interested in politics, and studied it more.Soon he started a small group to express his political views. His hard work made his little group bigger and bigger, this group became the Nazis, one of the most dangerous terrorist organizations ever. Hitler became the Führer of Germany. He almost eliminated all the Jews with horrible and violent concentration and extermination camps. Time passed and Russia was about to take Berlin, Hitler couldn’t handle being caught by the Russians, so he and his wife both committed suicide in a bunker.

Historical Time Period

The time period was from 1889 to 1945. In this time span World War 1 and 2 took place. Hitler served in World War 1 and became a dictator in World War 2. The text reference for him serving in the army in WW1 is on page 29, “ In the four years of World War 1 he was promoted only to the rank of corporal.” The text reference for him being a dictator in World War 2 on page 68, “By World War 2, Hitler had become one of the most powerful leaders in history.”

Historical Period Influence on Hitler
When Hitler was almost broke, he got a job, as a soldier in the German Imperial Army during World War 1. This got him to understand war and politics. On page 32, “Hitler learned a lot about war and it’s tactics while serving in the army.” Then when Hitler expressed his political views, he was able to achieve the title of Führer. As leader of Germany, he became a powerful leader and general during World War 2. On page 68, “By World War 2, Hitler had become one of the most powerful leaders in history.”

Reflection

This book matters because it raises awareness of our past. It tells us a little bit more about how life used to be in that time. I did not like Hitler at all, and I think he is a horrible person. If someone from a certain race makes a problem, it doesn’t mean you should go and kill off the rest of that race. I would give this book a 5/10, because it got boring at times. I would recommend any non fiction book to anyone because it teaches us about past or modern cultures. These types of books give us an idea of how other societies have been affected by past and present events. Overall, this is a book that taught me a lot about Nazi Germany and how horrible it was.
