Leyla the Black Tulip – BB3:
Summary:
Leyla is a girl who is 12 years old, lives in Georgia,
and she had a tough time since her father disappeared. Her father, Aslan, was a
famous artist and best known artist in Georgia. Her father used to teach her
and her brother art, Cengiz, all the time. However, then came the war
between Russia and the Ottoman Empire and they asked him as an artist to draw
what happened in the war,but when the war was over they said he disappeared.
Since then, no one saw him and Leyla and her family had a hard time with the
money and living. One day she saw some tulips and planted them in her garden;
tulips were hard to grow, but she had a gift. One day, there was a contest for
the biggest mushrooms and she won the prize, which was a huge cheese; some
people there got impressed and asked her mother to trade her with them for
money, but her mother refused. So, Leyla went to the people the next day and
agreed to come secretly to save her family for the gold coins and money. At
night she snuck out of the house and went to the ship, on the ship she found
other girls and they told her she was actually going to be a slave and made a
new friend with a younger little girl. When they arrived to Istanbul the very
next day, after being washed, given new clothes, and taught some manners, they
were off to the markets to be sold. Leyla was sold on the third day to a man
who seemed important since everyone starred at him when he walked in. Next thing
Leyla knew she was working in the palace for the sultan. They took her into a
room and asked her what was her specialty; she replied I am an artiest but the
lady told her to never speak of it again because it was forbidden, so she said
growing tulips and the lady seemed surprised because it was a very rare talent.
Leyla soon made a friend, Belkis, who also works in the gardens. Then she kept
working in the gardens preparing for a celebration for the sultan and sultanas
and princes and princesses. She wanted to see it so badly but it was forbidden.
The youngest prince, a 14 years old, his name was majnun. He caught her and
told her to immediately go back to her room. She got terrified but Belkis told
her he jokes all the time. One day the Sultan asked the Harem which was palace
to meet the workers, so when Leyla was there she saw the girl from the boat but
in the hands of a Sultan. The girl immediately ran towards Leyla’s legs and the
sultana left with the girl. At the end before the sultan left he threw a handkerchief
at Belkis feet which meant he is picking her to be his favorite which means she
will work personally for him and she might become a sultana. Then, she started
to paint secretly in her hiding place while using some paint from a girl, but
when the girl asks her for who, she lies and tells her the house keeper.
However, her secret was out. The next day she saw the housekeeper, was proven
guilty and was sent to jail, but she got bailed out by the prince who was also
looking at her painting in her hiding spot and thought they were good even
though they were forbidden. She also found out that there was a contest for a
pouch full of gold coins to whoever from the fair harvests the most beautiful
tulip and an even greater prize to however harvests a black tulip which was
impossible and never done, but Leyal has been planting 5 tulips secretly and
was hoping to win. She is also hoping to reunite with her father and family.
When the prince knew that she was a great artist he showed her the best artists
in the world and asked the sultan to let her work for a master of art who was
the best in art. So when she was there she heard a familiar voice on the way,
but the man was painting a room for the sultan. Everyday she thought maybe it
was her father. Will she win the tulip contest and will she reunite with her
father? Read the book find out.
The historical setting is in the
Ottoman Empire in 1720. It is the same as the book because around that time the
Ottoman Empire were having a conflict with a tribe in Afghanistan over the
control of western and northwestern parts of Iran. And in the book it talked
about a war with Russia and the Ottoman Empire. The book also talked about
prince Mujnun and Leyla the main character and how he helped her and in a
period of history there is a famous story of Leyla Mujnun that is similar in
the book.
How did the historic time affect the characters:
The historical time affected the
characters because at that period of time religion took place and it was forbidden
to paint because they thought it was god’s work and no one could copy it, and
it affected the main character because she loved painting and she was talented
in painting.
Main Characters:
Leyla is the main character she is
courageous because she left with the men secretly without telling her mom to
save her family. She is curious because she was watching a party but it was
only for the sultan and sultanas but she was there because she was curious to
know how they look like. She is talented because she has a special talent of
growing tulips that not everyone can do.
What did the
Author use:
The author used flash backs at the beginning
of the book about how Layla’s father use to teach them art and have a good
time. It helped her become a better and talented artist.
Point of View:
The story was told from the first
person point of view. That helped develop the main character since it was
possible to know what they’re feeling and thinking, and therefore the reader
was able to understand better the main character throughout the story.
Theme:
The theme of the book is nothing is
impossible because at first Leyla thought that being something special is
impossible for her but when she went to the castle and got to work for a great
artiest she thought that she did it that nothing is impossible.
Reflection:
I think this book matters book it
can tech you things like nothing is impossible only if you try and it is
interesting. I also like the book because it is in my favorite time of history.
I would recommend this book to people who like the Turkish Empire and the
people who like stories about the sultans and sultanas. I would rate this book
10/10 because of how interesting it was. Overall this book was amazing
interesting and at the same time teaches you lessons.
