Summary
Dreamrider is a strange story about a boy, Michael Terny, who moves to a new school and has to deal with bullying from his classmates because he is fat. He faces many problems with his father and his friends at school but is unable to solve them. Until finally he realizes that he has the power to dream and become stronger through dreaming. Things get very complicated when Michael becomes so powerful that he is able to control his dreams and eventually his dreams affect his life and that “He might have found a way for things in the dream to affect the real world” and “There is a link between the dream and the real world”. Michael makes us believe that he can take vengeance from people who are mean to him through his dreams. Even though he sometimes does wicked things to the bullies we still feel empathy towards him. But does he really control his dreams and the events that happen in his life? Read the book to find out!
Genre
This book is fiction because Michael controls his dreams while sleeping. In page 45 it shows how Michael is able fly into space with his friend Leah. “The world swept up to meet us. I felt the rush of air whipping my clothes against my body… and then I leveled out, turned up to the sky. This time I traveled fast… The ground was shrinking at an incredible rate. I could just make out the sea framing the shape of Australia and then the curvature of Earth itself… We exploded into blackness… The bright dust of stars was all around us.
Character development
At the beginning of the book Michael was weak and bullied and could not defend himself. Example in Page 25 “Everyone in the room went quiet… I went red. I couldn’t help it. But when he starts to control his dreams he becomes stronger and is able to face his fears and bullies. On page 159 he speaks to martin, one of his bullies and says “Martin. I’m tired of it. I don’t want to waste my time… I know you are trying to terrify me physically and emotionally. Drive me mad. Well, I’m not playing the game anymore. Play with yourself, Martin.”
Author’s characterization
The author describes the character’s thoughts and emotion in a specific way. This helps the reader picture in his mind what the character feel and what is going to do. In page 17 “I hate the first time, standing across the road from a school and knowing you’ve got to go in, sort things out, talk to people, attend classes with strangers staring at you. I had done it many times, but I still hatted it.
Main setting
This book takes place in Millways High School in Australia. In page 19 “Welcome to Millways High School, Michael.”
Point of view
This book is written in first person which is “I”. This point of view helps the reader better understand what the character is thinking, about looking at and planning on.
Theme
The theme of this book is how to overcome the fear from bullying. In page 158 “I’m not scared of you anymore, Martin… He put his arm around my shoulder. My flesh shrank from his touch, but I didn’t move. I didn’t want him to misinterpret it as fear.”
Reflection
I liked this book overall, even though in some parts of the book it became confusing and a bit off topic. I would recommend it to people who are being bullied in school, because this book will cheer them up, and let them have self-confidence. I would rate this book a 7/10 because it wasn’t very interesting.
