Summary:

Jack fletcher, a 12 year old english boy, is sailing with his father and crew to search for the Japanese island. The crew were attacked by ninjas on the way to the japanese island 1611 in a village names toba and their boat sank in the water. They Used to believe at their time that they were called pirates. Only jack survives and his father leaves him with his prized possession a rutter.

Jack was rescued by a legendary samurai swordsman Masamoto Takeshi who decides to adopt him until he is old enough (16), which makes Masumoto's son Yamato envious.

Jack discovers that the leader of the ninja was known as Dokugan Ryu (Dragon Eye) through Masamoto following Jack's description of his distinctive solitary green eye. Yamato and Jack engage in heated sparring with their bokken after defeating a ninja in another attack, Masamoto enrolls him in his samurai school in Kyoto, the Niten Ichi-ryu to train as a samurai along with Akiko and Yamato. So he can become one of the legendary samurais.

Jack develops a strong relationship with a girl, Date Akiko. At the same time, Jack is singled out by Oda Kazuki and his friends who bully him on the basis of being a gaijin (foreigner). Jack is generally disliked until he wins a taryu-jiai tournament against a rival school, which earns him Yamato's respect.  During a festival, Jack, Akiko and Yamato discover Dokugan Ryu attempting to assassinate Takatomi Hideaki, daimyo of Kyoto province. They manage to make him flee and are rewarded by Takatomi and Masamoto.

The historical setting is between the 13th century and the 19th century. What was important was their armor and the armor of their horses and the strong and powerful swords that they had. It also matches with my book because in my book they used the same things and said the same words which is Bushi which means warrior. Samurais had help a lot because in that time they did not have guns which means that they can protect himself in a safe way, not as in you have to hide and sneak up to kill someone.

The historical setting affects John Fletcher (The main character) life because he has never seen Samurais before and then he was taken by a Samurai after his fathers death and that Samurai put him in a Samurai school to train John Fletcher how to fight. After he became a legendary Samurai he has to go through all of his mission and he has to take adventures.

Characters:

Jack Fletcher – protagonist of the Young Samurai series, he is also a brave man and he is not scared.
John Fletcher – father of Jack Fletcher, Pilot aboard the Alexandria, murdered by Dokugan Ryu, also brave and honest.
Dokugan Ryu – Dragon Eye, one-eyed ninja and Jack's worst  enemy, bad, doesn’t say the truth.

The story is told in third person limited because they keep talking about the person and the person is not talking about himself so they are explaining what is he doing in the book. The point of view helps develop the main character because John Fletcher is a brave man and a smart man and so they are describing him, and they are describing how he is smart, and he is smart because he knows how to study and he knows how fight and to protect himself.

The theme of this novel is Good vs Evil because in this book all the good warriors fight the bad people who are the ninjas. There is a lot of fighting between the good warriors and the bad warriors and that’s why they are both know as enemies to each other.

Reflection:
This book matters because it shows how Samurais used to look like and how they used to take boats to different Islands and fight ninjas. I liked how they explained everything in a nice way and I like to read books about Samurais. I would recommend it to people who like to read about Samurais, and who like books that have adventures in it and you would really enjoy it. I would rate the book a ten out of ten because it is one of the best books i've ever read and the most interesting book ever and so I enjoyed it a lot.
