The boy in Striped pyjamas -Beatrice

The Boy in The Striped Pajamas

The story takes place in Berlin and in Poland in the year, 1942 and ended in 1943, during world war two. Bruno lived in Berlin with his family, and he had three best friends, Karl, Daniel, and Martin. One day when he arrived back home from school he found Maria, the family made packing his bags, he doesn’t like it when people touch his things without asking so he said,
·      “What are you doing?” (Pg. 1) (Reaction)
In a nice way but he was still mad. Maria told him that they had to leave Berlin. Bruno didn’t want to leave Berlin because he loves it there and he would miss his best friends.
·      Ones they got into the new house he hated it, (reaction (characterization techniques))
but his sister Gretel seemed to love it, and she fell in love with one of his dad’s “employee”. She would do anything to stay close to his. One day Bruno got bored so he wanted to build a swing, the employee of his dad started screaming at this old man wearing striped pajamas named Pavel to get the best car tire to build a swing. He started using the swing and then fell off, so Pavel took him inside the house and put a plaster on the cut. Bruno was very bored now so he decided to do some exploring. He walked for about 1 hour and a half until he saw a fence. He saw a dot next to the fence that it because bigger and bigger every step, until the dot became a boy. Bruno got closer and said “Hello,”(pg. 106) from that word they became friends. They meet everyday at the same time. One day Bruno went in the kitchen and he saw the boy, Shmuel, he was very shocked. Shmuel looked hungry so Bruno got a piece of chicken and gave it to him. In the mean time his dad’s employee walked into the room and saw Shmuel eating. He asked Bruno, “Do you know this kid?! Do you!!” Bruno stayed quite. Then he turned to Bruno and started screaming, “Did you just steal food!? Did you!” (pg. 171) And Shmuel looked away. For five days Bruno went to the fence and Shmuel wasn’t there. The sixth say Shmuel was there with a black eye and a lot of bruises, and Bruno was very worried and asked what happened, but there was no reply. A few weeks later Shmuel said that his granddad and dad were gone, and asked Bruno if he could help him find them. Bruno said sure. One day Bruno walked into Gretel’s room while she was fixing her hair, while they were talking Gretel screamed, “Lice, lice, lice!” (pg. 183-184)  He mom ran to her room, and it turned out the whole family had lice. That night their parents were discussing about going back to Berlin. The next day when they woke up, they were invited to go to their dad’s office, which wasn’t a every day thing, while they were in there, dad said that the would be going back to Berlin next week. Bruno quickly ran to the fence to tell the news to Shmuel so that they could look for his father as soon as possible. Two days later Bruno went to the fence and crawled to the other side of the fence to help Shmuel find his father and grandfather, but it was raining so they were wet. The heard a loud whistle and then they were all in a dark room. What happens next?
·      The major characters are Bruno, which likes to go on adventures, and Shmuel, which is on the other side of the fence and doesn’t have a lot of freedom.
·      The book was in the third person limited point of view, because he was written in an external voice, so this helps us understand Bruno better.
·      The theme of the book is sadness, and power of words, because the book is sad and because the words that Bruno said to Shmuel were very sweet and they made him feel a little better.

·      Vocabulary words:
1.     Banister- handrail at the side of a staircase
2.     Greenery- Green empty space to grow plants or vegetation
3.     Rooting- cause
4.     Grimaced- ugly twisted espression
5.     Tremble- start to shake

Historical time period (war world 2)

It was during 1939 and 1945. 40,000,000–50,000,000 deaths incurred in World War II.  It was the bloodiest war in the history. Hitler had become determined to invade and occupy Poland because there were many Jews and he thought that it would be a good country to build concentration caps (which I went to see when I lived in Poland).
